GTA Vice City remains one of Rockstar Games' most recognized open-world titles, and the name is becoming relevant again as Rockstar prepares for Grand Theft Auto VI. The original game launched in 2002, while the upcoming GTA VI brings players back to a modern version of Vice City.
GTA Vice City Original Game
The original GTA Vice City was released on October 27, 2002. Developed by Rockstar North, the game takes players to a fictional 1980s-inspired city filled with beaches, swamps, businesses and criminal activities.
The story follows Tommy Vercetti as he attempts to build a criminal empire. The open-world design allowed players to explore the city while completing missions and progressing through the story.
GTA Vice City Still Available
The original GTA Vice City has continued to remain accessible across several platforms. Rockstar lists versions for PS4, PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Xbox and other platforms.
Rockstar also continues to maintain its mobile release. The latest Android update listed by Rockstar was released on January 12, 2026, bringing general bug fixes and improvements.
GTA Vice City Returns in GTA VI
The biggest current development is the return of GTA Vice City in Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar describes the new game as taking place in Vice City, USA, within the wider fictional state of Leonida.
GTA VI follows Jason and Lucia, whose lives become connected to a criminal conspiracy after a planned score goes wrong. Their story takes them across Leonida as they depend on each other to survive.
GTA Vice City and GTA VI Release Date
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026, as the release date for GTA VI. The game will be released on PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
The return of GTA Vice City is therefore not a simple remaster of the 2002 game. Instead, Rockstar is using Vice City as the setting for a new story, new characters and a much larger world.
GTA Vice City Collector's Collection
Rockstar has also introduced The Goodtime State: Vice City Collection, a limited GTA VI Collector's Box inspired by Leonida and the fictional TV character Macca the Gator.
The collection includes a Macca the Gator figure, Oakley sunglasses, a Vice City hat, magnetic mirror, swizzle spoon, keychain, crossbody bag, shot glass, enamel pins, stickers and a double-sided Leonida poster. The GTA VI video game is available for purchase individually.

What Happens Next?
For fans of GTA Vice City, the current focus is now closely connected to GTA VI. Rockstar is continuing its promotional campaign ahead of the November 19 release, while the original 2002 game remains part of the franchise's history.
