Bungie has confirmed Destiny 2’s final major update arrives on June 9, 2026, ending active development while keeping servers online for longtime players worldwide.
Bungie has officially confirmed that active development for Destiny 2 is coming to an end. The studio shared the announcement through a statement titled “Every End is a New Beginning” on May 21, 2026.
The final major content update will launch globally on June 9, 2026. While the game’s servers will remain online, Bungie says Destiny 2 will move into long-term maintenance mode similar to the original Destiny.
Final Destiny 2 Update Brings Massive Changes
The upcoming expansion-sized update was previously known as Shadow and Order. Bungie has now reworked and rebranded the project into a celebration of the franchise’s full history.
One of the biggest additions is a complete loot overhaul. Legacy raids and dungeons will receive refreshed rewards, tiered loot systems, and weapon tier upgrading. This update aims to make older content more rewarding for longtime players and newcomers alike.
Another major feature is the return of Pantheon 2.0, the boss-rush activity mode. Players will face tougher encounters with updated gear rewards and progression systems.
Bungie is also introducing Legendary Marks, a new progression mechanic earned through Triumphs across the game. These marks can unlock armor ornaments, weapon engrams, and an exclusive in-game Title.
Sandbox and Gameplay Improvements
The June update will also bring several gameplay balancing changes. Exotic Armors are receiving new Tier 5 stat systems, giving players deeper build customization options.
In addition, Bungie is redesigning activity difficulty selection within the Director menu. According to the studio, the goal is to reduce “choice paralysis” and make activities easier to navigate for casual players.
These changes are expected to improve accessibility while still keeping high-level endgame content challenging.
Destiny 2 Servers Will Stay Online
Even though active live-service development is ending, Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 will remain fully playable for the foreseeable future.
The studio explained that the game will continue operating in a permanent maintenance state, similar to how the original Destiny still functions today. Players will still be able to access campaigns, raids, PvP activities, strikes, and dungeons after June 9.
This announcement has reassured many longtime fans worried about losing access to years of purchased content.

Bungie Launching Destiny 2: The Collection
To simplify the game for future players, Bungie is releasing Destiny 2: The Collection on June 9. The package will combine all legacy campaigns, dungeons, and content packs into a single purchase.
Standalone expansions and older DLC packs will also receive permanent price reductions across digital stores.
The move is designed to make the game easier to buy and understand for new or returning players.
Bungie Shifts Focus Toward Marathon
The decision to end yearly Destiny 2 expansions follows major internal restructuring and strategic changes under Sony.
Bungie is now redirecting most of its development resources toward future projects, especially Marathon, the studio’s competitive extraction shooter.
Industry analysts believe this marks a major transition period for Bungie as it moves beyond the Destiny franchise era that defined the studio for years.
Destiny 2 Gameplay and Features
Originally launched in 2017, Destiny 2 became one of the world’s most popular free-to-play online multiplayer shooters.
Players create a Guardian and choose between three classes:
- Hunter for agility and stealth
- Titan for defense and heavy combat
- Warlock for abilities and support powers
The game combines story-driven PvE missions, six-player Raids, three-player Dungeons, and PvP multiplayer through the Crucible mode.
Its evolving story has centered around the conflict between The Light and The Darkness across major expansions including The Witch Queen, The Final Shape, and The Edge of Fate.
PC Requirements and Availability
According to the official Steam specifications, Destiny 2 requires at least an Intel Core i3 3250 or AMD FX-4350 processor with 6GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 660 graphics card. Recommended settings include an Intel Core i5 7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X with 8GB RAM and a GTX 970 GPU.
The game currently needs around 105GB of storage space on PC.
Destiny 2 remains available on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The base version is free-to-play, while expansions and collections are sold separately.
