Interstate 95 (I-95) has been identified as Connecticut’s most hazardous highway in a study examining road crashes between 2020 and 2024. The findings highlight ongoing concerns about heavy traffic, road construction, and driving conditions on one of the region’s busiest routes.
The study, conducted by Hard Rock Bets, analyzed 1,478 recorded crashes across Connecticut during the five-year period. Interstate 95 recorded the highest number of crashes among the highways examined, followed by Interstate 84 and Interstate 91.
For drivers who regularly use I-95, the findings reflect concerns about congestion and road safety. However, some motorists believe that other roads can be equally challenging, depending on traffic conditions and driving habits.
Interstate 95 Records the Highest Number of Crashes
According to the Hard Rock Bets study, Interstate 95 recorded 73 crashes in Connecticut between 2020 and 2024. This placed I-95 at the top of the highway crash ranking.
Interstate 84 followed with 68 recorded crashes, while Interstate 91 ranked third with 60 crashes. These figures show that all three major highways experienced a significant number of reported incidents during the period.
The findings have brought renewed attention to Interstate 95 safety, particularly because the highway carries heavy traffic and connects important destinations across the region.
However, the reported figures represent crash counts. They do not necessarily establish which highway has the highest crash rate per mile or per vehicle traveling on it.
Heavy Traffic and Construction Create Driving Challenges
Heavy traffic and ongoing construction are among the main concerns raised by drivers who regularly travel on Interstate 95. Congestion can make it harder to maintain a safe following distance, while construction zones may require sudden lane changes, reduced speeds, and extra attention.
Lindsey Bousquet, a Rhode Island resident who frequently travels on I-95, described the highway as difficult to drive on. She said she often encounters traffic accidents while traveling along the route.
Bousquet also recalled seeing fatal accidents during trips to and from New York. These experiences have influenced how she views Interstate 95 road safety.
She explained that I-95 has become one of her least favorite highways to drive on. She has even chosen alternative routes, including Interstate 84, when traveling back to Rhode Island to visit her family.
Her comments highlight how repeated exposure to traffic congestion and crashes can affect drivers’ confidence in a particular highway.
Drivers Have Different Opinions About I-95 Safety
Although some motorists consider Interstate 95 dangerous, others have a more balanced view of its risks.
Jillian Grossbach, who is from West Chester, New York, said she would not necessarily describe I-95 as dangerous in every situation. However, she acknowledged that it is not the safest highway.
Grossbach also pointed out that she has encountered roads in New York that she considers more dangerous. Her experience suggests that perceptions of road safety can vary depending on the routes drivers use and the conditions they encounter.
These different opinions show why highway safety cannot be judged by personal experiences alone. Traffic volume, road design, construction activity, driving behavior, and reliable crash data all help provide a clearer picture.
Frequent Crashes Raise Concerns for Regular Commuters
Anni Lockwood, also from West Chester, New York, said she travels on Interstate 95 several times a week to get to school.
During the previous 10 months of traveling on the highway, Lockwood said she had seen approximately five crashes. Her experience reflects the concerns that frequent commuters may develop when they regularly encounter accidents on the same route.
Despite these concerns, Lockwood emphasized the importance of staying alert behind the wheel. She said she tries to drive as carefully as possible and believes that paying attention is essential when using I-95.
Her advice is especially relevant in busy traffic, where a driver may need to respond quickly to sudden braking, changing traffic patterns, or vehicles entering and leaving the highway.
New Haven, Hartford, and Waterbury Lead City Crash Rankings
The Hard Rock Bets study also identified the Connecticut cities with the highest numbers of crashes. New Haven ranked first, followed by Hartford and Waterbury.
These findings add another dimension to the state's road safety concerns. While Interstate 95 recorded the highest crash count among the highways examined, the city rankings identify other areas where traffic incidents deserve attention.
Busy urban roads often involve a mix of commuters, local traffic, intersections, and highway access points. These conditions can create additional challenges for motorists, although the study details provided do not establish the specific causes of crashes in each city.
The results highlight the importance of considering both highway and city-level crash patterns when discussing traffic safety across Connecticut.
How Drivers Can Stay Safer on Interstate 95?
The study does not mean that every trip on Interstate 95 will be dangerous. However, its findings offer a reminder that drivers should take extra care when traveling on busy highways, particularly in congested areas and construction zones.
Motorists should maintain a safe following distance, obey posted speed limits, and watch for temporary lane changes or roadwork signs. They should also avoid distractions and remain alert to sudden changes in traffic.
When congestion becomes heavy, allowing more time for the journey can reduce pressure to drive aggressively. Drivers should never use a phone while driving unless it can be done legally and safely through an approved hands-free system.
Choosing an alternative route may also be an option when conditions are difficult, but drivers should compare current traffic information and road conditions before changing their plans.

What Interstate 95 Safety Study Means for Connecticut?
The Hard Rock Bets study places Interstate 95 at the top of Connecticut’s highway crash ranking for the 2020–2024 period, with 73 recorded crashes. Interstate 84 followed with 68, and Interstate 91 recorded 60.
Comments from Bousquet, Grossbach, and Lockwood show how drivers can experience the same highway differently. While some report frequent accidents and difficult driving conditions, others believe that more dangerous roads exist elsewhere.
The study also identifies New Haven, Hartford, and Waterbury as the Connecticut cities with the most crashes, highlighting wider road safety concerns across the state.
Ultimately, the findings reinforce the importance of careful driving, awareness of construction zones, and attention to changing traffic conditions. For anyone traveling on Interstate 95, staying alert and making safe driving decisions remain essential.
