The Travers Stakes 2026 is set to headline an exciting Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. The 157th running of the Grade 1 Travers brings together two of this year's Classic winners for the first time.
Golden Tempo, winner of both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes after skipping the Preakness, will meet Preakness winner Napoleon Solo in the Travers Stakes 2026. The 1 1/4 mile race carries a $1.25 million purse and is scheduled as the day's main event.
Saratoga Hosts a Mini Breeders' Cup Card
The Travers Stakes 2026 is part of a loaded 14 race Saratoga program. Three other Grade 1 races offer Breeders' Cup qualifying opportunities.
The Personal Ensign is a 1 1/8 mile dirt race for fillies and mares and sends its winner toward the Breeders' Cup Distaff. The Forego gives dirt sprinters a route to the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, while the seven furlong Ballerina offers a place in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
The card also features the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial, with Woody Stephens winner Englishman, and the Grade 2 Lake Placid for three year old fillies over one mile on turf.
Personal Ensign Features Six Strong Contenders
The Personal Ensign field includes three horses coming from last month's Shuvee. Fully Subscribed won that race by half a length after catching Scottish Lassie, while Snowhyte finished third, 4 3/4 lengths behind the winner.
Margie's Intention will make her first start since winning the Listed Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes on the Preakness undercard. The Brad Cox trainee has finished in the top three in every start of her career.
Forego and Ballerina Bring More Star Power
The Travers Stakes 2026 weekend also features champion sprinter Book'em Danno in the Forego. He won last year's race by one length and enters after victories in the Mr. Prospector Stakes and Grade 3 True North.
Senior Officer, Tip Top Thomas and Maryland Sprint winner Bring the Smoke provide major competition.
The Ballerina features Eclatant and R Disaster, the division's two Grade 1 winners this year. Eclatant is unbeaten in three 2026 starts, including the Madison and Chicago. R Disaster won the Derby City Distaff by 2 1/4 lengths.
Ways and Means, Maida, Grand Job, Echo Sound, Kilwin, Munnings Express and Paradise City add further depth.
Travers Stakes 2026 Has a Deep Field
The biggest question in the Travers Stakes 2026 is whether Golden Tempo can defeat Napoleon Solo and a powerful group of rivals.
Napoleon Solo arrives after winning the Preakness and finishing second to Baby Vino in the Haskell. Baby Vino now faces an even tougher challenge in the Travers Stakes 2026.
The field also includes Indiana Derby winner Leading Change, Kentucky Derby runner up Renegade, Emerging Market, Silent Tactic, The Puma, Curlin Stakes winner Sea Strike and Kentucky Derby third place finisher Ocelli. Renegade enters after his Jim Dandy victory, while Leading Change remains unbeaten in his short career.

Del Mar and Kentucky Downs Add More Action
The Travers Stakes 2026 is not the only major racing attraction this weekend. Del Mar hosts the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes, which awards a Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile berth, followed by the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, a qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Turf.
Kentucky Downs also begins its 2026 meet with the Grade 1 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Sprint. Richard Baltas trainee Ag Bullet will attempt to become the first three time winner of the 6 1/2 furlong contest.
With Classic winners, proven Grade 1 stars and several emerging contenders, the Travers Stakes 2026 promises one of the most important races of the season. The showdown at Saratoga could provide a major clue about which three year old deserves to stand at the top of the division.
