Honda has issued an urgent safety recall for nearly 60,000 new electric SUVs over a faulty rearview camera glitch that completely blinds drivers.

Honda is pulling nearly 60,000 of its brand-new electric vehicles (EVs) off the road in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the safety campaign after discovering a widespread glitch that causes rearview cameras to distort or go completely black while reversing.


This latest safety push specifically impacts Honda’s newest electric SUV lineup, which was co-developed alongside General Motors (GM). It also builds on a separate, much larger previous safety action involving over a million older gas-powered models.


Glue Failure Blamed for Distorted Backup Images


The root cause of the current EV glitch comes down to a simple assembly issue. According to federal safety documents, an adhesive used during manufacturing can separate from the rearview camera case over time.


When this glue fails, moisture and environmental elements seep directly into the camera lens housing. This water intrusion causes the electrical system to glitch, leaving drivers with a totally blank dashboard screen or a heavily distorted image, drastically increasing the risk of a backing accident.


Which Electric SUV Models Are Affected?


The latest safety campaign impacts a combined total of 59,887 vehicles across both the Honda and Acura lineups. If you drive one of these specific models, your vehicle is likely included:


2024–2025 Honda Prologue: 44,199 units manufactured between October 10, 2023, and September 3, 2025.


2024 Acura ZDX: 15,688 units manufactured between December 19, 2023, and January 21, 2025.


Was Your Older Honda Already Recalled?


If you do not own one of the new electric SUVs listed above but your backup camera is still failing, you might be part of an older, massive 1.2 million vehicle recall. Honda previously issued a separate campaign for older gas and hybrid models dealing with a completely different technology failure.


In those older vehicles, a faulty communication coaxial cable connector was to blame. The weak digital connection regularly caused the backup camera image to drop out entirely on the center display.

  • 2018–2023 Honda Odyssey

For the current electric SUV issue, Honda will begin mailing official owner notification letters by July 6, 2026. Because supply chains take time to adjust, a second letter will be sent out as soon as local dealerships have the updated replacement camera components fully in stock.
