WhatsApp is expanding its teen safety features with new parental controls designed to give guardians more control over how younger users interact on the messaging platform. The new tools allow parents to manage several privacy, group, Status, and Meta AI settings from a protected parental controls section.
New WhatsApp Parental Controls for Teens
The latest WhatsApp parental controls let guardians decide who can interact with their teen in several areas of the app. Parents can restrict access to Channels, control whose Status updates their teen can view, and decide who can view the teen’s own Status posts.
Parents can also manage who is allowed to add their teen to WhatsApp groups and who can view the teen’s profile picture. These options are intended to give families greater control over potentially unwanted interactions without changing the platform’s basic messaging experience.
Another useful feature is group activity notifications. Parents can choose to receive alerts when their teen joins a new group, leaves a group, or when a group reaches 30, 100, or 250 members.
PIN Protection Adds More Control
The new parental settings are protected by a PIN created by the parent or guardian. This means teens cannot simply change the restrictions themselves without parental approval.
Guardians can also disable the parental controls if they no longer want to use them. This gives families the flexibility to adjust the settings as a teen gets older or their needs change.
WhatsApp also says that its privacy protections remain in place. Messages and calls continue to use end-to-end encryption, meaning WhatsApp and other third parties cannot access the private content of those conversations.
Meta AI Gets New Teen Content Settings
WhatsApp is also giving parents additional control over how teens use Meta AI. Guardians can choose between the standard 13+ content setting and a stricter Limited Content option.
The Limited Content setting restricts certain private processing-based features, including incognito chats and message summaries. This provides parents with another way to manage their teen’s interaction with AI tools inside WhatsApp.
WhatsApp Expands Child Safety Features
The new WhatsApp parental controls arrive as Meta continues to expand safety measures for younger users across its platforms. The company has introduced several tools focused on age-appropriate content, parental supervision, and interactions with AI.
Meta has also faced legal and regulatory pressure over child safety on its social media services. In recent months, the company has continued adding protections across WhatsApp, Instagram, and other products.
With these latest WhatsApp parental controls, parents gain more options for managing their teens’ group participation, Status visibility, profile privacy, and Meta AI access while WhatsApp maintains end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls.
