Surface Laptop Ultra Price and Availability

The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599. Microsoft has opened preorders, while shipping is expected to begin on October 16.

The pricing places the Surface Laptop Ultra firmly in the premium PC market. Microsoft is using the device to show how newer AI hardware can bring more advanced computing tasks directly to Windows computers.

This approach could be useful for developers, creators and other users who regularly work with large AI models and want to reduce their dependence on cloud based computing.

Nvidia AI Chip Brings Local AI Power

One of the biggest highlights of the Surface Laptop Ultra is its Nvidia AI hardware. The laptop is equipped with a Blackwell RTX Spark GPU, specifically engineered to efficiently manage intensive AI tasks on-site.

Microsoft says users can install and run different AI models without worrying about increasing monthly cloud bills. This means some AI tasks can be processed directly by the computer instead of being sent to remote data centers.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the GPU inside the Surface Laptop Ultra offers computing power comparable to Nvidia's DGX 1 data center server from 2016. That system reportedly cost $250 million.

The laptop can also offer up to 128GB of unified memory and up to one petaflop of computing power, making the Surface Laptop Ultra a major step beyond Microsoft's earlier consumer AI PCs.

New Magnetic USB C Charging Port

Microsoft is also introducing a new charging design with the Surface Laptop Ultra. The laptop has what Microsoft describes as the world's first magnetic USB C port.

The connection works in a similar way to Apple's MagSafe charging system. The magnetic connection is designed to make plugging in and disconnecting the charging cable easier.

Alongside the magnetic port, the Surface Laptop Ultra includes two additional standard USB C ports, giving users more connectivity options.

15 Inch Display and Premium Design

The Surface Laptop Ultra comes with a 15 inch display and weighs around 4.4 pounds. Its larger screen is designed to provide more working space for demanding applications, coding and other productivity tasks.

The hardware also supports Windows 11 and Microsoft's latest approach to hybrid AI computing. This allows workloads to move between the local GPU and cloud services depending on what the application needs.

Windows 11 and AI Coding Features

Microsoft demonstrated how coding applications can decide whether to process certain AI requests on the Surface Laptop Ultra or in the cloud. A green leaf icon indicates when an AI task is running locally on the computer.

Windows 11 also gives developers the option to place coding agents inside Microsoft Execution Containers. These containers are designed to limit unwanted system access while AI agents perform tasks.

Microsoft is additionally updating the Windows 11 device setup experience to make it easier for users to get started with the open source OpenClaw AI agent software.

Microsoft, Meta and the Future of AI PCs

The Surface Laptop Ultra arrives as Microsoft continues trying to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI market. Microsoft previously introduced the Copilot Plus PC standard in 2024, requiring systems to include neural processing units for a minimum level of AI performance.

The company has since simplified its product naming around the Surface brand while continuing to promote premium hardware and hybrid AI experiences.

Microsoft also announced that Meta plans to bring its Muse AI agent to Windows. Muse has gained attention as personal AI agents become more popular, recently rising to the top of Apple's App Store and moving ahead of ChatGPT.

Microsoft has released its own AI models, but leading models from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic remain more widely used in many developer and performance comparisons.

The Surface Laptop Ultra therefore represents more than a new premium laptop. It shows Microsoft's effort to make Windows a stronger platform for local AI computing while giving users more control over where their AI workloads run.

Microsoft has been producing its own computers since 2012, and CEO Satya Nadella has indicated that the company's position in the PC market is changing. With the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft is now betting that powerful local AI hardware can become an important reason for consumers and professionals to choose a Surface device.
