Epic Games latest update featuring Epic Games Store, Fortnite and Unreal Engine developments in July 2026

The biggest fresh Epic Games development is a leadership change at the Epic Games Store, alongside a major launcher/store rebuild, continued Fortnite expansion, and recent Unreal Engine 5.8 development work.

Epic Games Store gets New Leadership

Epic has appointed Martin Keely, a former senior leader of Blizzard's Battle.net business, as Vice President and General Manager of the Epic Games Store. The appointment was announced on July 27, following CEO Tim Sweeney previously teasing new EGS leadership and "big plans for 2026 and 2027."

The timing matters because Epic is working on substantial changes to its PC storefront and launcher rather than simply maintaining the existing client.

Epic Games Launcher is Getting a Major Rebuild

At State of Unreal 2026, Epic confirmed it is undertaking a complete rebuild of the Epic Games Launcher and storefront backend. The objective is to improve performance and allow Epic to ship player-facing features more quickly.

Epic is also bringing the store closer to the Fortnite ecosystem. Purchases of selected partner games/content on EGS can unlock cosmetics based on that IP inside Fortnite, and Epic said more than 30 collaborations are planned during 2026, continuing into 2027.

This makes the Martin Keely appointment particularly important. His Battle.net experience arrives while Epic is trying to improve one of the areas where EGS has historically faced criticism: the launcher and overall PC-store experience.

Fortnite Remains Central to Epic's Strategy

Fortnite remains Epic's biggest consumer platform and is increasingly functioning as an ecosystem of games and creator experiences rather than only Battle Royale.

One of the latest entertainment updates is Fortnite Festival Season 15

One of the latest entertainment updates is Fortnite Festival Season 15, featuring rapper Lil Tecca as its Icon. The new season began July 30, 2026, bringing associated music, outfits and Festival content.

Epic is also expanding monetization for Fortnite creators. Recent developer announcements include expanded player-report data for in-island transactions, while UEFN continues to be a major part of Epic's creator strategy.

Unreal Engine 5.8 is Progressing

Another significant July development is Unreal Engine 5.8 Preview, announced through Epic's developer community on July 20, 2026. MetaHuman 5.8 was also part of the latest developer announcements.

Unreal Engine remains central to Epic's long-term business, extending well beyond Fortnite into third-party game development and real-time 3D production.

Epic Games Store free Games Continue

The weekly free-game program remains active. Epic's official store says a new free game is offered every Thursday across PC and mobile, with claimed giveaway titles staying in the user's library.

You can check the current giveaway directly on the Epic Games Store Free Games page.

Epic is also Coming off Major Layoffs

The growth initiatives are happening after a difficult corporate move earlier this year. In March, Epic announced plans to eliminate more than 1,000 jobs, with Reuters reporting that reduced Fortnite usage was among the factors behind the restructuring.

Epic Games is reshaping its gaming ecosystem with new Epic Games Store leadership

So Epic's 2026 story has two sides: cost reductions and restructuring on one hand, while investing in EGS, Fortnite's creator economy and Unreal Engine on the other.

What Matters Most Right Now?

The July 27 appointment of Martin Keely is the most notable recent Epic Games corporate development. Combined with the already announced launcher/backend overhaul, it indicates that Epic is preparing a much larger push for the Epic Games Store through late 2026 and 2027.

For gamers, the areas worth watching next are new EGS launcher features, weekly free games, Fortnite updates and collaborations, UEFN creator monetization, and further Unreal Engine 5.8 developments.
