New God of War Overview

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 delivered massive news for PlayStation fans. Santa Monica Studio took the stage to pull back the curtain on the future of the God of War franchise.

The studio officially locked in the release window for its next game while confirming that another major entry starring Kratos is already in active production. Here is everything announced about the upcoming chapters in the mythic saga.

God of War Laufey Sets Official PS5 Release Date

Originally unveiled during PlayStation's State of Play, God of War Laufey now has a locked launch date. The game will officially release as a PlayStation 5 exclusive on February 16, 2027.

The title represents a bold step forward for the series. It shifts focus to a fresh perspective while maintaining the heavy cinematic storytelling and visceral action fans expect from Santa Monica Studio.

Stepping into the Boots of Laufey the Just

For the first time in a mainline console entry, players will step away from Kratos as the primary protagonist. Instead, players will control Faye (Laufey the Just), Kratos' late wife and mother to Atreus.

Faye was a legendary warrior, rebel leader, and guardian of the Jötnar whose past actions shaped the entire Norse saga. Taking control of Faye allows players to experience her combat prowess firsthand as she battles forces across mythic realms.

Into the Everywhen: Plot and Afterlife Setting

The premise of God of War Laufey begins right where Kratos and Atreus' story originally started in the 2018 reboot—following Faye's death on her funeral pyre.

After her body burns, Faye awakens in a mysterious afterlife realm known as the Everywhen. The story follows her journey as she fights through this uncharted domain, encountering legendary figures from multiple mythologies. This adventure bridges critical narrative gaps between her past, the 2018 game, and God of War Ragnarök.

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 Panel and Star-Studded Cast

Franchise Creative Director Cory Barlog led the SDCC 2026 panel to share key insight into the game's development. He was joined on stage by a prominent cast that features:

  • Deborah Ann Woll.
  • Jack Quaid.
  • Perlina Lau.
  • Christopher Judge.

Barlog highlighted how the team collaborated closely with the cast to bring deep emotion and intensity to Faye's journey through the afterlife.

Kratos Returns: Standalone Mainline Sequel Confirmed

In addition to Laufey, Cory Barlog delivered a major surprise during the panel. He confirmed that a standalone, Kratos-led God of War game is actively in development at Santa Monica Studio.

This upcoming Kratos project will tie directly into the events setup in God of War Laufey. While there is no official title or release window yet, the studio confirmed that Faye's story acts as a vital bridge toward Kratos' next chapter.

What This Means for the Franchise?

The announcements signal an ambitious expansion of the God of War universe. By exploring Faye's heroic legacy before connecting back to Kratos, Santa Monica Studio is building a multi-layered narrative experience. Fans can look forward to diving into God of War Laufey on PS5 in February 2027.
