Shigeru Miyamoto is a name that represents the heart of modern video games. Born in 1952 in Sonobe Japan he joined Nintendo in 1977 and changed the world of entertainment forever. Today he is known as the father of modern gaming because he created characters and worlds that millions of people love.

From the brave plumber Mario to the heroic Link in Zelda his work has touched generations of players.

The Man Who Created Gaming Icons

Miyamoto started his journey by creating Donkey Kong which introduced the world to high energy platforming. Later he directed Super Mario Bros in 1985 and The Legend of Zelda in 1986. These games were not just fun but they also saved the video game industry during a difficult time. His ability to turn simple ideas into massive adventures is what makes him a true legend.

Even as technology moved into three dimensions Miyamoto led the way with Super Mario 64 which taught everyone how to move in a 3D world.

Designing Games with Joy and Discovery

The secret to Miyamoto success is his focus on gameplay first. He believes that a game should be easy to understand but full of surprises. Many of his best ideas come from his own life. For example his childhood spent exploring forests and caves inspired the Zelda series. His interest in gardening led to the creation of the Pikmin games.
