Xbox Studio Overview

Microsoft is rolling out a massive Xbox Reset, marking the most radical Xbox studio restructuring in the company's history. Under the new leadership of CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, Microsoft is shrinking its gaming empire. The goal is simple: cut organizational complexity and fix weak profit margins.

The strategy targets the elimination of 3,200 roles. Following a wave of 1,600 layoffs, a new phase cut 268 more positions. This corporate shift is redrawing the boundaries of every major Xbox studio.

Core Studio Reorganizations

Microsoft is flattening its corporate structure. Independent business units are closing, and major franchises are moving under two primary pillars: Activision and Bethesda.

The Halo franchise is seeing the biggest change. A newly formed team under Activision will develop the next mainline game. Meanwhile, the original Xbox studio for the franchise, Halo Studios, has downsized into a small support team.

Expanding Bethesda and Merging Racing Giants

Other developers are moving under new management. Obsidian Entertainment is being absorbed directly into Bethesda. The Avowed developer is now collaborating with Bethesda Game Studios on an unannounced Fallout project.

Additionally, Playground Games and Turn 10 are no longer separate. Microsoft merged them into a unified Xbox studio team to jointly manage the Forza and Fable franchises.

Streamlining Casual and Heritage Studios

Even classic developers are shifting. Rare and World's Edge have moved under Activision management to streamline publishing.

Microsoft Casual Games is also changing hands. The division was absorbed by Candy Crush maker King to centralize mobile gaming. Every Xbox studio focused on casual players now sits under a single mobile umbrella.

Impending Closures and Sales

To drop financial liabilities, Microsoft is unwinding its historical studio acquisitions. Ninja Theory faces imminent closure after failing to find a buyer.

Furthermore, strategic talks to divest Arkane Studios are ongoing, though complicated by French labor laws. This represents a massive shift in how Microsoft values each acquired Xbox studio.

Spin-outs and Newly Independent Studios

Some developers are leaving the ecosystem entirely. Undead Labs successfully completed its separation from Microsoft, becoming a fully independent, employee-owned entity.

Double Fine and Compulsion Games have also completed their spin-outs. Both teams are returning to independent operations while keeping the rights to their respective intellectual properties.

The Death of the Game Pass Strategy

This restructuring kills the old Game Pass strategy. Leadership is pivoting toward premium product sales and strict console exclusivity.

Reports indicate that Microsoft lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in acquisitions over the past decade. To fix this, Sharma slashed Game Pass prices and removed new Call of Duty titles from the day-one subscription tier.

What Lies Ahead for Xbox?

The massive restructuring phase is currently 75% complete. This means roughly 1,400 more layoffs are expected before the fiscal year ends. Leadership will address the future of each remaining Xbox studio during an all-hands town hall meeting scheduled for October 6.
