Physint Game Overview
Xbox Game Studios has officially taken over publishing duties for Physint after a stunning, unexpected cancellation by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Hideo Kojima revealed that PlayStation unexpectedly pulled funding and cancelled the project in mid-June 2026.
Following a tireless three-month search for a new partner, Kojima Productions signed a major expansion deal with Microsoft's Xbox to finance and publish the title.
The Publisher Shift: From PlayStation to Xbox
The Breakup: Sony released a statement framing the departure as a mutual "step away" after careful consideration. However, Hideo Kojima openly clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that his studio was blindsided by the cancellation and spent three months scrambling to secure a new backer to keep the game alive.
The New Alliance: Xbox Game Studios—which is already working with Kojima Productions on the upcoming horror cloud-game OD—stepped in to fully rescue and fund Physint. Xbox executive Asha Sharma stated they are "honoured" to back Kojima's convention-challenging vision.
Beyond Gaming: The updated partnership with Microsoft explicitly extends beyond the digital space. Xbox and Kojima Productions are now collaborating to adapt the Physint intellectual property across film and television.
What is Physint?
The Concept: Billed as a "next-generation tactical espionage action" title, Physint is widely considered the true spiritual successor to Kojima's iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise.
Interactive Cinema: Kojima is developing the game using cutting-edge technology meant to completely blur the lines between a video game and a movie. He aims for it to function as "both a game and a movie at the same time".
Star-Studded Casting: The game is currently in its early development and casting phases. Prior promotional teasers confirmed high-profile talent attached to the project, including Charlee Fraser (Furiosa), Don Lee / Ma Dong-seok (Eternals), and Minami Hamabe (Godzilla Minus One).

Release Window and Platforms
Estimated Launch: Because development only began in earnest following the launch of Death Stranding 2 in mid-2025, Physint remains a long-term project. Kojima has stated that it is still roughly 5 to 6 years away, targeting a release around 2030.
Platform Availability: While it was originally conceived as a flagship PlayStation 6 exclusive, the shift to Microsoft means it will target Xbox ecosystems—sparking rumors that it could headline Microsoft's next-generation hardware initiatives (codenamed Project Helix) alongside PC.
