September 23 2026: Microsoft has shocked the gaming world by confirming that Obsidian Entertainment is developing a new Fallout game. In a massive Xbox Game Studios restructuring, the gaming giant has shifted Obsidian to operate directly under the Bethesda Softworks umbrella.

This strategic move aims to streamline development on the highly anticipated project and deliver it to fans as quickly as possible.

Why Xbox is Making a New Fallout Game?

The massive global success of the Amazon Prime TV show has created an unprecedented demand for wasteland adventures. Because Bethesda Game Studios remains busy with other projects, Fallout 5 is still stuck in early pre-production. To bridge this multi-year gap, Microsoft greenlit this new project.

Dream Team Returns to the Wasteland

Fans have been begging for a new Fallout game from this studio for over a decade. Thankfully, the unannounced spin-off is being helmed by Josh Sawyer, the beloved project director of Fallout: New Vegas. Joining him is lead writer John Gonzalez.

This powerhouse duo ensures that the new Fallout game will focus heavily on grounded faction politics, dark humor, and dense, branching player choices that react to every action.

Secret Journey to Becoming Reality

The road to this announcement has been quite a journey. The new Fallout game actually started as an internal prototype back in 2024. For a brief moment, it shifted into a completely non-Fallout post-apocalyptic concept.

However, Microsoft saw the massive potential and officially greenlit it as an authentic new Fallout game in July 2026.

Huge Sacrifices and Engine Debates

To make room for this massive new Fallout game, Obsidian had to pivot its entire studio strategy. The team reportedly cancelled multiple unannounced projects, including a planned sequel to their 2025 fantasy RPG, Avowed. Furthermore, Xbox executives are currently debating what engine to use.

While Epic’s Unreal Engine was considered, recent indications show they are leaning toward Bethesda's proprietary Creation Engine to easily share assets and keep this new Fallout game feeling traditional.

What This Means for the Franchise Roadmap?

This new Fallout game is just one piece of a massive franchise expansion. Alongside this brand-new title, Bethesda confirmed that separate, official remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are actively in development.

By bringing the original creators back to build a new Fallout game while remastering the classics, Microsoft is ensuring that fans will have plenty of radioactive content to enjoy for years to come.
