Game Informer has officially revealed a 14-page exclusive cover story on Grand Theft Auto VI featuring interviews with Rockstar's lead designers. Below are the latest confirmed details regarding mechanics, world design, and release information.
Game Informer GTA 6 Overview
On September 29, 2026, Game Informer dropped Issue 382, which features a massive 14-page exclusive cover story on GTA VI. Based on direct interviews with Rockstar’s lead designers, this major reveal gives us the most detailed look yet at the upcoming blockbuster. From a stunning map scale to deep role-playing mechanics, here is everything you need to know about GTA VI.
Key Features
- Massive Vice City map.
- Dynamic tropical weather systems.
- 170+ detailed animal species.
- Seamless dual-protagonist swapping.
- In-depth physical RPG elements.
- Releasing November 19, 2026.
A Massive Map and Living Ecosystem
If you thought previous open-world games were big, GTA VI takes world design to an entirely new level. The state of Leonida is confirmed to be at least twice the size of the previous map. Even more impressive, Vice City is reported to be 11 times larger than Los Santos.
Exploring this vast world in GTA VI means dealing with an advanced, fully dynamic weather system. Players will experience heavy winds, severe rainstorms, dense atmospherics, and fully dynamic cloudscapes. The environment is also incredibly alive with over 170 animal species roaming around.
Leonida features more than 60 bird types and 30 land mammals, including alligators, manatees, flamingos, and pelicans. You can even interact with dogs by petting, scolding, or studying them, which ties directly into a new honor system inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2.
Next-Level Gameplay Mechanics
Combat and driving in GTA VI have received massive upgrades. Players can seamlessly swap between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, right in the middle of the action. For example, you can drive as Jason, then instantly switch to Lucia to return fire during a high-speed chase. While romantic involvement between the two characters is optional, their relationship status will directly alter how the story plays out.
Stealing cars is no longer just breaking a window. GTA VI introduces a new device called the "WAINK scanner." This tool lets you check a vehicle's security level, tracking devices, and resale value before making a move. For newer car models, you will actually need to perform digital key bypasses to get inside.
Gunplay in GTA VI now features a slow-motion targeting mechanic heavily inspired by the "Dead Eye" system. This feature allows you to aim at specific enemy body parts with pinpoint precision. Additionally, hit markers are now color-coded: red confirms a fatal kill, while yellow indicates an incapacitation.
Evading the Law and RPG Elements
The classic six-star wanted level is back, but escaping the police in GTA VI is harder than ever. Authorities will track you closely using CCTV footage, vehicle descriptions, physical appearance, and your clothing. To effectively lose the heat, you must physically change your disguise by buying a new outfit at a clothing store or getting a fresh haircut to shake off your pursuers.
Your character's daily lifestyle also matters. Deep RPG elements are built right into GTA VI, meaning your diet and exercise habits directly affect your physique and stamina. If you overeat or skip the gym, your performance will quickly degrade. On the flip side, working out and lifting weights will increase your character's muscularity and overall strength levels.

Campaign Length, Activities, and Release Date
Get ready for a long journey, because Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson confirmed that a recent playthrough of the main campaign and impactful side missions in GTA VI took roughly 80 hours to complete. When you want a break from the main story, the game offers incredible side activities. Players can enjoy weightlifting, backyard wrestling, scuba diving, base jumping, kayaking, billiards, and even riding electric scooters around the city.
So, when can you finally get your hands on GTA VI? The official launch date is securely locked in for November 19, 2026. At launch, GTA VI will be available exclusively on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC release announced yet.
For the most dedicated fans, Rockstar also announced a $400 Vice City Collection merchandise box. However, this premium collector's edition has sparked some online controversy because it does not actually include a physical or digital copy of GTA VI. Ultimately, the massive innovations coming to this franchise are set to redefine the gaming industry forever.
