Francesco Bailo, Deputy Director of the AI, Trust and Governance Centre at the University of Sydney, said many researchers believed reports claiming that Claude Fable 5 could be easily "jailbroken" had been overstated.
According to Bailo, the US government may have recognised that its original response was stronger than necessary. He also suggested that maintaining the restrictions could have created a difficult regulatory precedent and triggered stronger opposition from an AI industry that has invested heavily in maintaining communication with the US government.
Bailo added that if Anthropic's models remained restricted for these reasons, competing frontier AI models would likely have faced similar treatment.
Tanishq Abraham, former Research Director at Stability AI and now head of medical AI company Sophont, described the government's decision as a significant moment for the AI industry.
He believes the improving relationship between Anthropic and the US government may be partly due to the efforts of Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown. However, Abraham also raised an important question for the future of AI regulation: whether every frontier AI model will eventually require government approval before being released.
