Tesla has introduced one of the biggest changes to its driver-assistance technology in recent years. The company has discontinued free lane-steering (Autosteer) for new entry-level vehicles, rebranded several Autopilot-related features, and started rolling out a more cautious Full Self-Driving (FSD) software update.


These updates signal Tesla's growing focus on its paid Full Self-Driving (Supervised) subscription while also responding to increasing regulatory scrutiny over autonomous driving technology.


Tesla Ends Base Model Autosteer 


For many years, every new Tesla came with Autopilot, including lane-centering through the Autosteer feature. That is no longer the case for new entry-level buyers.


Tesla has removed the standard Autosteer capability from newly ordered base Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Instead, these models now include only Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) as the standard driver-assistance feature.


Traffic-Aware Cruise Control automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed based on surrounding traffic, but drivers must continue steering the vehicle themselves.


Drivers who want automatic lane-centering must now subscribe to Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which is currently priced at $99 per month.


Premium Tesla models, including the Model S, Model X, and Cyberbeast, continue to receive more advanced autonomous driving features as part of their package.


Tesla Rebrands Autopilot Features Following Regulatory Pressure


Tesla has also updated the naming of several in-car driving technologies as part of a broader software redesign.


The company has removed the "Autopilot" branding from multiple features to make the system's capabilities clearer and reduce potential confusion.


The key changes include:


Navigate on Autopilot is now called Navigate on Autosteer.


The Autopilot settings menu has been renamed Self-Driving.


Tesla's FSD Computer is now referred to as the AI Computer.


Although the names have changed, the features continue to perform similar functions, including automatic highway lane changes, exits, and navigation assistance.


FSD Version 14 Introduces the New "Sloth" Driving Mode


Tesla is expanding the rollout of Full Self-Driving Version 14, bringing several AI-powered improvements designed to make autonomous driving more cautious and predictable.


One of the biggest additions is a new Sloth driving profile.


The new mode joins the existing Chill and Assertive options and focuses on maximum safety by:


  • Driving at lower speeds.
  • Selecting safer lanes.
  • Making more conservative driving decisions.
  • Reacting more cautiously in busy traffic.


Tesla has also improved the AI system's ability to:

Tesla Mobile App Gains New Self-Driving Statistics


Tesla's Summer 2026 software update adds several new smartphone features through the Tesla mobile app.


Owners can now monitor detailed Self-Driving Statistics, including:


  • Total autonomous miles driven.
  • Historical FSD usage.
  • Longest intervention-free driving streak.


Tesla has also expanded integration of its AI assistant Grok inside supported vehicles.


While Full Self-Driving is active, drivers can use voice commands to perform tasks such as:


  • Opening the glovebox.
  • Adjusting climate controls.
  • Making hands-free phone calls.
  • Managing other supported vehicle functions.


These additions are designed to improve convenience while reducing the need for manual interaction with the vehicle's touchscreen.


Tesla Faces Increasing Regulatory and Safety Scrutiny


Tesla's software changes arrive as regulators continue examining advanced driver-assistance systems worldwide.


According to recently released data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla recorded 207 ADAS-related crash reports during a single month, representing the highest monthly total reported under the agency's tracking program.


Meanwhile, transportation regulators in Europe, including Germany's Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), continue evaluating Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology before approving wider deployment across European markets.


These reviews focus on ensuring the system meets strict safety and vehicle certification standards.

Tesla's New Strategy Focuses on Paid Autonomous Driving


Tesla's latest updates make the company's long-term direction increasingly clear.


Instead of offering advanced lane-centering technology as a standard feature on every new vehicle, Tesla is placing greater emphasis on its subscription-based Full Self-Driving service. At the same time, the company is introducing clearer branding, expanding AI-powered features, and strengthening driver monitoring to address safety concerns.
