About the SteamVR Update

Valve has rolled out SteamVR Beta 2.17.4, introducing one of the biggest updates to the VR platform in recent months. The latest release focuses on bringing more of Steam's core features directly into virtual reality while improving performance, stability, and the overall user experience.

The update is currently available through the SteamVR Beta channel and gives users an early look at features that are expected to play an important role in Valve's upcoming Steam Frame platform.

Steam Brings More Features Directly Into VR

The highlight of SteamVR Beta 2.17.4 is the deeper integration of Steam services inside the VR dashboard.

Players can now access several in-game Steam features without leaving virtual reality. This includes viewing Achievements, Community Guides, Notes, and other useful Steam tools directly from the dashboard.

Valve says this is only the first preview, with additional features planned throughout the current beta testing cycle. Users must install both the Steam Client Beta and SteamVR Beta to experience these new capabilities.

Quick Access Menu Makes VR Easier to Use

SteamVR now includes a Quick Access Menu similar to the one found on the Steam Deck.

The new menu lets users quickly manage notifications, adjust volume, check battery levels, and control brightness without interrupting gameplay. It also adds a dedicated slider for adjusting environmental and camera brightness inside VR.

Valve has also added shortcuts for common dashboard actions, making navigation faster and more convenient. Overlay applications can now be closed directly from the dashboard, reducing unnecessary steps.

Better Dashboard Controls and User Interface

The update also improves how users interact with floating windows and overlays.

Grab handles have been refined for smoother resizing and movement. Players can now adjust floating windows closer or farther away using the controller thumbstick. Floating frames remain centered while being resized, making the interface feel more natural.

Valve has also refreshed the appearance of Room Setup boundaries, improved the laser pointer design, and enhanced the positioning of overlays placed above or below the player. These small improvements help create a cleaner and more comfortable VR experience.

Stability and Performance Receive More Attention

Besides new features, Valve continues to improve SteamVR's reliability.

Recent updates have fixed headset initialization problems that affected some third-party VR headsets when several body trackers were connected. Linux support has also improved, including better stability, rendering compatibility, and error logging.

Steam Link users benefit as well, with Valve fixing an issue that caused a dropped frame every few seconds during streaming sessions.

OpenXR Support Continues to Expand

Valve remains committed to OpenXR as the preferred standard for VR applications.

Recent SteamVR beta releases introduced support for 32-bit OpenXR applications and fixed several runtime issues for developers. The latest update also corrects problems related to OpenXR events and view configuration reporting, helping developers build more reliable VR experiences across different headsets.

Earlier 2026 Updates Laid the Foundation

SteamVR has received several important improvements throughout 2026.

The stable SteamVR 2.16 release introduced display quality fixes, reduced memory leaks on AMD graphics cards, and resolved shimmering seen on some VR headsets. Earlier beta versions also improved VR streaming, dashboard rendering, overlay cursor visibility, and Linux compatibility.

Together, these updates have prepared the platform for the larger feature rollout now arriving with SteamVR 2.17.4.

For users prioritizing utmost stability in their everyday VR gaming, it might be advisable to continue using the stable SteamVR release until the beta features have fully undergone testing.
