Toyota is preparing to bring the new Land Cruiser FJ to global markets, and the SUV is already creating strong buzz among off road fans in India. The company first revealed the rugged SUV at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 before officially launching it in Japan and Thailand in 2026. Reports now suggest that India could become one of the key future markets for this compact Land Cruiser.
The Land Cruiser FJ is being positioned as a smaller and more affordable member of Toyota’s famous Land Cruiser family. Even though it sits below the Fortuner and Land Cruiser 300, Toyota has designed it as a proper body on frame SUV with serious off road capability. That combination is one of the biggest reasons behind the growing excitement around the model.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ India Launch Timeline
Recent reports indicate that Toyota is planning to introduce the Land Cruiser FJ in India around 2028. Several automotive sources claim that production for the Indian market could begin in the second half of 2028, possibly at Toyota’s upcoming Maharashtra facility.
Toyota has not officially confirmed the India launch date yet, but industry reports strongly suggest that the company sees strong potential in India’s growing lifestyle SUV market. Buyers are increasingly looking for rugged SUVs that can handle both city driving and adventure travel, and the Land Cruiser FJ appears designed exactly for that audience.
The SUV is expected to compete with models like the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Force Gurkha, Maruti Suzuki Jimny, and even some variants of the Scorpio N in India.
Rugged Design Inspired by Classic Land Cruisers
One of the biggest highlights of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is its bold retro inspired design. The SUV features a boxy shape, upright stance, chunky wheel arches, and muscular body cladding that give it a traditional off road look. Many reports are already calling it the “Baby Land Cruiser” because it carries the classic Land Cruiser identity in a smaller package.
Toyota has focused heavily on practicality and durability. The compact size is expected to improve maneuverability on rough terrain while still offering enough cabin space for everyday family use. The SUV also gets high ground clearance and strong approach angles to support off road driving.
Dimension reports show the SUV measures around 4.6 meters in length, placing it close to the Mahindra Scorpio N in size. However, Toyota has kept the wheelbase shorter to improve off road handling and breakover capability.
Engine, Platform and Off Road Capability
The Land Cruiser FJ is based on Toyota’s IMV ladder frame platform, which already underpins vehicles like the Hilux and Fortuner. This platform is known for toughness and reliability, making it ideal for off road conditions.

Global versions of the SUV currently use a 2.7 litre petrol engine that produces around 163 to 164 horsepower. Toyota is also offering a part time four wheel drive system along with a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
Some reports suggest Toyota may also consider hybrid technology for future markets including India. However, there is still no confirmation regarding a diesel engine for the Indian version.
The Land Cruiser FJ is expected to include modern driving technology as well. Reports mention features such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, connected car technology, terrain modes, hill descent control, and advanced safety systems.
Expected Features
The India-spec model may include:
- Large touchscreen infotainment
- Digital instrument cluster
- Connected car tech
- 360-degree camera
- ADAS safety package
- Terrain driving modes
- Hill descent control
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Expected Price and Why It Matters for India?
The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has already launched in Thailand at a price equivalent to around Rs 36 lakh, while Japanese pricing starts at roughly Rs 27 lakh after conversion. In India, experts expect Toyota to position the SUV between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 35 lakh depending on localization and variant strategy.
If Toyota manages competitive pricing through local production, the Land Cruiser FJ could become one of the most important lifestyle SUV launches in India over the next few years. The company currently lacks a compact premium off roader below the Fortuner, and the FJ may help fill that gap perfectly.
