Nintendo officially announces Star Fox Switch 2 remake with cinematic visuals, co-op gameplay, online battles, release date, pricing, and upgraded multiplayer features.
Nintendo has officially revealed a brand-new version of the classic Star Fox experience for the next generation. The upcoming game, titled Star Fox, is a cinematic remake and reimagining of the beloved Star Fox 64. The project is being developed exclusively for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and is already creating major discussion among longtime fans and new players.
The announcement arrived during a surprise 15-minute Star Fox Direct presentation on 6 May 2026. Nintendo had not teased the event in advance, which made the reveal even more unexpected. Interest in the franchise has been growing again after the recent appearance of Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this year.
Star Fox Switch 2 Release Date and Pricing Details
Nintendo confirmed that the game will launch globally on 25 June 2026. Players in South Korea will receive the game slightly later on 2 July 2026. The company also shared pricing details for both digital and physical editions.
The digital version will be available for $49.99 in the United States, £41.99 in the United Kingdom, and €49.99 across Europe. Meanwhile, the physical edition will cost $59.99, £49.99, and €59.99 depending on the region. Nintendo also confirmed that pre-orders are already live through major retailers and online stores.
A Full Cinematic Reimagining of Star Fox 64
This remake is not being treated as a simple visual upgrade. Nintendo describes the project as a full cinematic reimagining of the original adventure. The game now includes modern cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue, and a large orchestral soundtrack designed to make the campaign feel more dramatic and immersive.
The visual style has changed noticeably compared to older Star Fox games. Characters such as Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad now feature more realistic and animal-like designs. While many players appreciate the updated graphics and animation quality, some longtime fans have mixed opinions about the new artistic direction.
Classic Branching Missions Return
One of the most important features returning from the original game is the branching mission structure. Players will once again travel across famous planets including Corneria and Zoness while choosing different routes through the campaign.
Nintendo confirmed that difficulty options will also return with improvements. Players can begin with Easy or Normal mode, while an Expert difficulty setting can be unlocked later for those looking for a more challenging experience. This system is expected to make the game more accessible for newcomers while still satisfying experienced players.
New Asymmetrical Co-op Gameplay
One of the biggest additions in the remake is a brand-new asymmetrical local co-op mode. In this mode, one player controls the Arwing spacecraft while another player acts as a dedicated gunner.
The second player uses the new Joy-Con 2 mouse-style precision controls to target enemies and assist during combat. Nintendo says the feature was designed specifically for the hardware capabilities of the Switch 2. Early reactions suggest this could become one of the game’s standout features, especially for couch co-op sessions.
Online Multiplayer Supports Up to Eight Players
The remake also introduces expanded online multiplayer features. Players can battle in 4v4 team dogfights or standard deathmatch modes with support for up to eight players online.
Several classic locations are returning as multiplayer arenas, including Sector Y and Fichina. Nintendo also confirmed support for local GameShare functionality, allowing nearby players to join matches more easily.
Online matchmaking and the new GameChat communication feature will require an active subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo Adds Star Fox Music to the Nintendo Music App
Alongside the game reveal, Nintendo also expanded its music streaming support for the franchise. Ten tracks from the upcoming game were officially added to the Nintendo Music on 8 May 2026.
This move gives fans an early preview of the remake’s orchestral soundtrack before the full game launches. Many listeners have already praised the updated music style for staying faithful to the original themes while sounding more cinematic.
File Size and Platform Requirements
Nintendo estimates the game’s file size at around 14.8 GB. Compared to many modern releases, the size is relatively manageable despite the visual overhaul and voice acting additions.
The game is being developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, meaning it will not release on the original Switch hardware. Players planning to use online features should also prepare for a Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement.
Fan Reactions Have Been Mixed but Mostly Positive
Community reactions to the reveal have been largely positive, especially regarding gameplay improvements and multiplayer additions. Many fans are excited to see the Star Fox franchise returning with a larger production scale after years of limited activity.
However, the new realistic character designs have divided opinions online. Some longtime players prefer the stylized appearance from earlier entries, while others believe the updated designs help modernize the series for a new audience.
Despite the debate, excitement around the project remains high across gaming communities.
Leaks Accuracy Has Increased Confidence in Other Nintendo Rumors
An interesting part of the discussion surrounding the announcement is that several details about the remake had leaked earlier and were later proven accurate. Because of this, confidence has increased around other Nintendo-related rumors currently circulating online.
One of the biggest rumors involves a possible full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that could reportedly launch in late 2026. Nintendo has not officially confirmed that project, but the successful Star Fox leak has made many fans believe additional announcements could happen soon.
Star Fox Could Become an Important Early Switch 2 Exclusive
With cinematic presentation, modern multiplayer features, and nostalgic campaign design, Star Fox is shaping up to become one of Nintendo’s major early exclusives for the Switch 2 era. The combination of classic gameplay and new technology could help introduce the franchise to a completely new generation of players while also reconnecting longtime fans with one of Nintendo’s most recognizable space adventures.
As the June 2026 release date approaches, more gameplay details and previews are expected to appear. For now, Star Fox has already become one of the most talked-about Nintendo announcements of the year.
