Rivian’s new R2 electric SUV configurator is now live with aggressive pricing, premium features, and direct competition for Tesla’s Model Y Performance.

Rivian R2 electric SUV in Launch Green during official configurator preview

Rivian has officially opened the online configurator for its upcoming R2 electric SUV, giving reservation holders their first detailed look at pricing, features, and customization options before deliveries begin in 2026. The launch arrived earlier than Rivian’s previously expected June schedule, signaling growing confidence in the company’s production plans at its Illinois factory.

The R2 is expected to become Rivian’s most important vehicle yet. While the premium R1S and R1T helped establish the brand, the more affordable R2 is designed to reach a wider audience and increase sales volume. The newly opened configurator now shows exactly what buyers can expect from the mid size electric SUV.

Performance Trim Leads the Launch

At launch, only the R2 Performance trim is available for configuration. It starts at $57,990 and delivers 656 horsepower, an estimated EPA range of 330 miles, and a 0 to 60 mph time of just 3.6 seconds. Rivian says some locations could see deliveries within one to six weeks once production ramps up in spring 2026.

The company also confirmed two additional variants. The R2 Premium will arrive in late 2026 with a starting price of $53,990, while the entry level R2 Standard is planned for 2027 at $48,490.

Rivian is clearly following a high margin launch strategy by prioritizing the expensive Performance version first. This approach helps the company maximize early revenue while production scales.

Colors, Interior Choices, and Tesla Comparison

The configurator offers several paint options, including Launch Green, Catalina Cove blue, and Borealis purple. Esker Silver is the only standard color without an added charge. Buyers can also choose between all season or all terrain wheel designs depending on driving preference.

Inside, Rivian offers Black Crater Signature and Coastal Cloud Signature interiors, both featuring the company’s redesigned cabin and large central touchscreen. A compact spare tire is also available as an optional upgrade for off road focused buyers.

The R2 Performance directly targets the Tesla Model Y Performance. Rivian’s SUV starts slightly lower in price, giving the company an important competitive advantage in the growing electric SUV market.

The bigger challenge may come in 2027 when the lower priced R2 Standard enters a market where Tesla already offers cheaper entry level options. Still, Rivian is betting on design, space, and brand identity to attract buyers looking for something different.
