Google's unreleased COSMO AI app briefly leaked on the Play Store, revealing a powerful, proactive on-device assistant powered by Gemini Nano ahead of Google I/O 2026.

Google COSMO is an unreleased, experimental AI assistant from Google that briefly leaked on the Android Play Store on May 1, 2026, before being quickly removed. It represents Google's push toward highly proactive, on-device AI agents.

Here are the detailed features and technical specifications based on the leaked application:

Core Technology and Architecture

Local Processing: Unlike traditional cloud-reliant assistants, COSMO integrates a full, local Gemini Nano model directly into the app. This accounts for its unusually large file size of 1.13 GB.

Inference Modes: The app features a settings menu allowing users to choose how the AI processes data:

Nano-only: Operates strictly offline using the local Gemini Nano model for maximum privacy.

PI Only: Relies exclusively on a server-side "Personal Intelligence" model.

Hybrid: Automatically toggles between local and cloud processing based on connectivity and task complexity.

Proactive "Agent" Capabilities

COSMO is designed to be proactive rather than just waiting for user commands. It features 14 built-in "Skills" that trigger automatically based on your on-screen activity and conversations:

Browser Agent: Powered by Google's "Mariner" web automation tool, allowing the assistant to automate tasks directly on the web.

Conversation Summary: Automatically generates a recap of recently ended text exchanges when you switch topics.

Calendar Event Suggester: Detects when you agree on a time or date with someone in a conversation and offers to schedule it automatically.

Document Writer: Drafts letters or summarizes texts automatically if you mention needing a document.

Deep Research: Compiles multi-source reports for complex queries.

Instant Image Search and Task List Manager: Streamlines the process of locating particular photos and monitoring active to-do items.

System Integration and Privacy Concerns

Deep Screen Access: To function proactively, COSMO utilizes Android's AccessibilityService API. This grants the assistant deep access to read and analyze on-screen content in real-time.

Privacy Implications: While the local Gemini Nano model allows data to be processed offline a win for privacy the sheer depth of access required for an AI to constantly read the screen and automate tasks has sparked discussions among security researchers regarding data surveillance and algorithmic accountability.

Current Status

The app (published under the package name com.google.research.air.cosmo) was swiftly pulled from the Play Store, indicating the release was accidental. Because the leak occurred just weeks before Google I/O 2026 (starting May 19), it is widely expected that Google will officially reveal COSMO and clarify its relationship with the existing Gemini app at the developer conference.
