The long-awaited future of Eorzea has finally been unveiled. During the Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, Square Enix officially announced Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the sixth major expansion for the critically acclaimed MMORPG.
Launching in January 2027, this expansion marks a massive turning point for the game, kicking off a brand-new narrative journey: "The Godless Realms Saga."
A New World in Peril: The Setting of Evercold
The story of Evercold takes players beyond the world they know and into The Fourth. This is a new "reflection"—a parallel dimension—that is currently facing an icy apocalypse. An unstoppable, encroaching ice storm is slowly consuming the land, and it will be up to the Warriors of Light to stop the freeze. As the first chapter in a fresh story arc, Evercold promises a darker, more mysterious tone than previous adventures.
Brand New Jobs and Level Cap Increase
Powering up your character is a core part of any expansion, and Evercold delivers. The character level cap will rise from 100 to 110. To help you tackle these new challenges, two original combat jobs are joining the roster:
A New Tank: Designed specifically for FFXIV, offering a fresh way to protect your allies.
A Physical Ranged DPS: A brand-new playstyle that focuses on mobility and distance.
Notably, both jobs are entirely original to FFXIV, meaning they aren't based on classic classes from previous Final Fantasy titles.
Combat Overhaul: Reborn vs. Evolved Mode
In one of the biggest mechanical shifts in the game's history, Square Enix is introducing two distinct ways to play:
Reborn Mode: This retains the classic combat system players have used for years, keeping the traditional hotbar and rotation depth.
Evolved Mode: A streamlined system designed to reduce the number of inputs while putting a heavy emphasis on unique job identity.
This update aims to make the game more accessible for newcomers while giving veterans a fresh way to experience their favorite jobs.

The Evangelion Crossover: Ghosts of Desire
The "wow" factor of the announcement was undoubtedly the new 24-player Alliance Raid series: "EVANGELION - Ghosts of Desire." This massive crossover features creative input from khara, Inc., the legendary studio behind Neon Genesis Evangelion. Players can expect high-concept sci-fi aesthetics and intense encounters that blend the worlds of Eorzea and Eva in ways never seen before.
Smarter Progression and Modern Customization
Square Enix is listening to player feedback regarding "the grind." Evercold introduces Seasons, a progression system that moves away from stressful daily resets. Instead, a weekly-based reward system will be implemented to better accommodate players with busy real-life schedules.
Additionally, the Armoury Update will streamline gear progression. Once you obtain high-level gear, that item level can be applied across multiple jobs in your armoury, reducing the need to farm separate sets for every class. On the visual side, players can look forward to:
Full color pickers for hair and eyes.
Face paint layering for more unique looks.
Toggleable equipment parts to further customize your silhouette.
Coming to Nintendo Switch 2
In a massive platform expansion, Final Fantasy XIV is officially coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.
August 2026: The base game launches on the new Nintendo console.
January 2027: Evercold arrives simultaneously on Switch 2, PC, PS4/PS5, and Xbox.
While the Switch 2 version requires its own subscription fee, it does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Furthermore, players with an existing subscription on other platforms will enjoy a 50% discount on their Switch 2 sub.
How to Prepare: Patch 7.5 and the Free Trial
The road to the ice begins very soon. Patch 7.5 launches on April 28, 2026, introducing the bridge quests that link the current Dawntrail story to the events of Evercold.
For those who haven't started their journey yet, the Free Trial is expanding again. With Patch 7.5, the trial will include the entire Shadowbringers expansion, allowing anyone to play for free all the way up to level 80 with no time limits. If you've been waiting for a sign to start playing, this is it.
