Buick is officially bringing back the rear-wheel-drive sedan for 2027. Built on the legendary Alpha platform, this bold move marks the brand's first RWD car in three decades.

A major April 2026 industry leak confirms that General Motors is actively developing a brand-new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Buick sedan for the United States market. This marks a significant strategic shift for the automaker, reviving a classic grand-touring layout for the modern era.

Key Details of the Upcoming RWD Buick Sedan

Platform and Architecture: The vehicle will be built on an updated iteration of GM’s highly praised Alpha architecture. It will share its foundational chassis with the upcoming, next-generation Cadillac CT5 and the newly confirmed seventh-generation Chevrolet Camaro.

A Historic Milestone: This upcoming model represents a massive historical shift for the brand. It will be the first RWD Buick passenger car sold in America since the legendary Roadmaster was discontinued in 1996. Furthermore, it serves as the brand's first non-SUV offering since the front-wheel-drive Regal was axed in 2020.

Design Inspiration: While official GM renderings remain highly classified, industry analysts suggest the sedan's aesthetic will heavily borrow from Buick's critically acclaimed—but previously unproduced—RWD concepts.

Expect strong design cues inspired by the 2015 Avenir sedan and the 2016 Avista coupe.

Powertrain and Performance

Because the updated Alpha platform prioritizes internal combustion engines (ICE), it completely bypasses GM's EV-only "Ultium" architecture. While its Camaro and Cadillac platform-mates may receive GM's rumored new 6.7-liter V8, the Buick sedan will focus on luxury. It is expected to utilize high-output turbocharged four-cylinder or V6 engines, specifically tuned to deliver premium, grand-touring refinement over aggressive track performance.

Production Timeline: Assembly for the new shared Alpha platform vehicles is slated to begin in Fall 2027. Production will take place domestically at GM's Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan.

This upcoming model signals Buick's strategic re-entry into the premium sedan segment, offering an internal combustion alternative tailored for driving enthusiasts who prioritize classic rear-wheel-drive dynamics and refined luxury.

For the first time since 1996, Buick is launching a rear-wheel-drive sedan. Built on the Alpha platform alongside the Camaro, this 2027 model marks a bold return to luxury performance.
